Hello! My name is Megan, an 18-year-old ocean activist living in Miami, Florida. Going to a school across the street from an amazing view of the ocean, I have found myself ever-so enthralled in its seemingly infinite beauty. I've also realized the desperate state the ocean is in from society's poor choices--things like over-fishing, illegal whaling, and, you guessed it, pollution.

Most people these days are concerned with "going green" and are determined to make their lives more eco-friendly. What many fail to realize is that while being green is admirable, something far larger is at stake from mankind's poor choices than the soil on which we walk, and that is the ocean. Perhaps we should all change our way of thinking and try on an outfit of a different color--blue.

After all; if the oceans die, we die.

watereddownlove asked: I hope you post some info about this on your site, as I'm sure you have loads of followers. There is a pod of orcas in canada trapped in ice. They managed to keep a breathing hole open since tuesday, but it's only a few square meters and it's closing quickly. The DFO NEEDS to dispatch an ice breaker IMMEDIATELY to get them to open ocean, which is more than 6 miles away. More info can be found on all major news websites, and thepetitionsite has a running petition to get the DFO to help them.

Answer:

Of course! :)

Everyone, go check out Melanie’s blog entitled A Voice for Animals. She’s an amazing, dedicated teen activist who is lending a voice to the voiceless. You can find her on Instagram @avoiceforanimals.

Keep up the awesome work!

vixxey asked: What's the story behind your crow? :X

Answer:

Someone tried raising him when he was a baby and clipped his wings so he couldn’t fly. When a pest control service found him, they were going to euthanize him because he had been imprinted on by humans until they remembered Pelican Harbor (the bird rescue I volunteer at). This was back in June and I’ve grown to love him so much! He thinks he’s a little human and for that reason we don’t think he’d do well in the wild. He likes to give kisses and eat blueberries, though. :)

hannahspicey asked: I love following your blog, and i admire all the volunteer work you do! I am just curious, where are you looking at schools, college wise?

Answer:

Thank you so much. :) My top schools are Lees-McRae College (they have a wildlife rehab center on campus!) and Unity College. I’ve already applied to LMC so I’ll know in the next few weeks if I’ve been accepted! Colorado College, Humboldt State and UC San Diego are some of the other schools I’m applying to.

anacondom asked: how did you get started volunteering?

Answer:

I started as a weekly volunteer back in January and over the summer I interned there so I became really valuable to the organization. Now I volunteer over 16 hours a week instead of three and can do most of the things that the staff members do. :) I’ve learned so much and without this volunteer opportunity I would have never stumbled upon the field of wildlife rehab.

anacondom asked: hey! what is your career goal?

Answer:

To become a wildlife rehabilitator. :) I was thinking about going to grad school to become a vet but I may do that later in life like you were thinking.

witheredroots asked: I read your post about saving the fox and started crying. How did you get to be involved in such an incredible volunteer field? I feel like I am not contributing enough to the world - I want so desperately to change things, to help with animal species and environment conservation, but I don't know where to get started! How do you do it?!

Answer:

I didn’t actually take part in the rescue, I just had the honor of meeting the foxes who were all rescued over a year ago. :) I totally wish I could have participated in such a compassionate act, though! Ever since I began volunteering at a seabird rescue station I have had opportunities to interact with and care for some pretty incredible animals and I am more than happy to dedicate all of my spare time to the organization.

I really don’t know how to tell you to get involved because I don’t know what opportunities are available near you. If you know of an animal rescue or sanctuary in your area I would start with that and see where it takes you!
